Gary Springer Show — Variety Talk (Interview)
December 2, 2008 by Jamal Mathis.
I thought September 26, 2008 was going to be a regular day for me. That was the day when I got an unexpected call from Esther Davis to do a T.V. interview with host Gary Springer. Esther Davis is a television host. My father met her a few years ago. I met her on the day and time when I appeared on her show (The Esther Davis Show) for the first time two years ago. Anyway, Gary Springer is a host with his own television show on the iMEDIA NETWORK called: The Gary Springer Show — Variety Talk . When I first received the call, it was about ten in the morning. I was already in the middle of my daily routines. I actually thought that she said Jerry Springer. I asked her several questions because I never heard about the Gary Springer Show before. She told me that the guest that was suppose to be on somehow couldn’t do it for some odd reason. Therefore, they desperately needed a replacement to do a show for that day. So out of the blue, she called me to come in and fill in for the guest that canceled.
I had no choice but to do it since I thought this would be another opportunity to have exposure and boost my resume. I was beyond nervous at this point. I started to doubt and said to myself, “Why did I just agree to do this?” They wanted me there with my keyboard at four o’clock to do the impromptu interview show. Since it was around ten in the morning, I had time to practice and get ready for it. I had no idea what they was going to ask or say, so I prayed to God and asked Him to give me courage, strength, and wisdom to do what I know I could not do myself. So, once I got there and was all ready, I was ready to expect the unexpected. I met with Gary Springer backstage before the show and asked him what he was going to ask me. He had no clue at all either. He did not know that the former guest canceled. Now he was unprepared and nervous like me. We both came to an agreement and said let’s just have fun with it. Pretend that it’s just a one on one conversation without the cameras. That’s exactly what I did when we started recording. During the interview I hardly glanced at the cameras. I was still nervous, but once I started to play the keyboard, the nerves went away. I was very comfortable and relaxed. When it was over, I thought I messed up a lot and stumbled with my words. I asked my father how I did. He told me it was good. He never saw me nervous or heard me stumble over my words. Well I’m my worst critic so I wanted to see it for myself once it airs on cable. I have to admit though, the first time I saw it, I was shy. However, once I continued to view it over and over again, it was not that bad. I’m glad I had the opportunity and experience to do the interview and trust on God to get me through it. (See the video for yourself)
